Experimenting with a different tool, called substack, this week. Let me know if there are any issues or feedback.
Listening Recos:
The most recent episode of the Reboot Podcast. It’s titled, What Subroutines are you running?
Jerry Colonna shares a coaching session with an entrepreneur who is struggling with exhaustion, burnout, and being away from his son who lives in Moscow.
As the title suggests, they spend an hour trying to untangle some old subroutines. Jerry sometimes calls these subroutines, “ghosts in the machine”. Like old computer code, these are patterns, belief systems, childhood scars and experiences that run in the background and influence the way that you experience the world as an adult.
The little section that rocked me was when Jerry’s guest (Daniel) said “well what can ya do, it is what it is.” Jerry paused and said Is it?? What if it was something different.” Just a strong reminder that was helpful for me.
Carl Jung Quote: “You are not what has happened to you. You are what you choose to become.”
I finally got around to listening to the Prof G Show (Scott Galloway’s new pod).
The gold in these episodes is found in the last 15 minutes. Scott does a segment called “office hours” where he fields questions that listeners have sent in. This is where you get Prof G at his best. Off the cuff and unfiltered.
For an example, in one episode a listener asks something like “Which of the FANG companies would be the best career opportunity in my late 20s?” Before picking apart the companies, Scott says, “Do you have offers from all four?? No? Well, go get offers.” I love this. Why go through the mental exercise until you are faced with an actual choice? He then goes on to give an answer, but the first part landed with me the most.
Some questions or ideas this week:
If you are the type of person to say “It is what it is..” try asking yourself, Is it? What if it was something different?
During quarantine, some of my helpful habits have been replaced with things like eating dessert after every meal and skipping workouts. I think it’s worth cutting yourself some slack during these extraordinary times, BUT I am worried about habits taking root during this time that will be really hard to shake post corona. If you are boozing more, will you be able to set this habit aside post corona?
Love you guys. Hope everyone is hanging in. Would you consider sharing this email with someone? Still trying to grow this list. Stuck at around 100 people. Thank you!
